How the SnowBrains Weather snow forecast works
This page ranks ski resorts across the US and Canada by how much snow is forecast to fall. Switch between Today, the 5-Day Forecast and the 7-Day Total, filter by ski pass, or tap Favorites to see only your favorite resorts. Each row shows the snow day by day, so you can see when a storm arrives, not just how big it is. Tap any resort for its full forecast: hourly temperatures, wind and gusts, the snow level, the forecaster’s discussion for US resorts, recent snowfall and conditions reports from skiers and riders.
Where the numbers come from
US resorts use the official National Weather Service forecast for the resort’s location. Canadian resorts use Environment Canada’s GEM forecast model. This page and the map refresh about every 15 minutes for US resorts and about every 30 minutes for Canadian resorts. Temperatures are adjusted to each resort’s mid-mountain elevation.
How the totals add up
A forecast day runs from 6am to 6am the next morning: a day half (6am to 6pm) and a night half (6pm to 6am). Today counts the hours that are left today. The 5-Day Forecast adds today and the next four days, and the 7-Day Total adds today and the next seven days. Each day is rounded to the whole inch, and a total shows the smaller of the rounded true total and the days added up as shown, so it never reads higher than either. A trace of snow shows as <1″.
Why is the 7-Day Total eight days of snow?
Because it counts today plus the next seven days. On a Monday it covers snow through the following Monday night.
Why can a total be an inch lower than its days added up?
Rounding. Say one day has 0.5″ forecast (shown as 1″) and the next has 1.7″ (shown as 2″). The days add up to 3″, but only 2.2″ is really forecast, so the total shows 2″. We always show the lower of the two ways of adding, because we would rather a number be a little low than a little too high.
